In the last few minutes of proper lighting, CN 4028 with it's spark arrestors visible throttles up around the curve at mile 77 Guelph Sub with train 568 after switching out Nachurs Alpine about 4 miles east of here.

On one of or if not their first revenue run, a pair of rebuilt CN AC44C6M's navigate the S curves through the town of Paris with 396's train in tow.

The sun’s setting quick but still has just enough left to shine CP T69 westbound over the Thames River in Woodstock as they pull their train out of Coakley Siding after meeting an eastbound. CP 3018 west in its endangered action red stripes was a great way to end off this warm summer day, photos like this make me look forward to summer months, although this scene is now fading onto the unlikely side.

I don't tend to shoot vertically often but not having a lens under 50mm at the time meant you have to improvise when you have something like this in your area. After leading CP 246 to Frontier Yard the day before despite the lack of PTC, ex CP 9023 now painted in the iconic Central Maine and Quebec colours snakes its way through the former TH&B Station in Hamilton with 247's train in tow. With no more stops for these guys till Lambton, the engineer puts the former CP red barn to the test doing every bit of track speed to get up the Hamilton Sub and hearing an SD40-2F doing business in 2020 on a mainline train was great. One to remember right here.

Just as a good snow storm started to roll in, CN 570 wastes no time up the Halton Sub passing under the Glencairn Golf Club bridge at Mile 30 with a very short train of Aldershot traffic in tow. Early 2021 when this was taken, CN was at the start of phasing out the Dash 8’s from the roster so this leader here had quite the attention as it stayed on this train for quite awhile leading in the same position most of the time. I’m not sure what the state of this unit is now but if anyone knows feel free to say.

With Snyder’s Rd in the background on the outskirts of Kitchener, CN GP40-2W no. 9547 leads 568 westbound after just cresting the grade out of Kitchener with the pair of iconic Canadian engines still working hard as they curve through the country side beside the Petersburg Regional Forest Trails on a snow covered sunny afternoon.

Propane season on the OSR - After just coming up from Tillsonburg, The St Thomas Job with the GP7’s have just cut their train preparing to make a lift at “Thomas Road” while the Woodstock Job pulls racks out of CAMI in the background. After the lift, the former SOO high hoods will then head to St Thomas for another day of switching propane and other customers under a sunny sky. Always great to hear motors built in the 50’s still doing work 70 years later.

A 568 is pictured here with zebra striped 4725 leading solo light power down the Huron Park Spur after just crossing Queen Street. They were called to switch Ampacet making them light power from Kitchener Yard down the spur as their car(s) were already at the interchange ready to go, thankfully the sun worked with me for this unique perspective with the mill in the background fully in view as normally their train would be obstructing it. This is also the last zebra painted unit out of Kitchener at the moment even though this unit wasn’t part of the quartet back in March.

As side a note this is my first photo uploaded to the site with my new Nikkor 10-24 which has been impressive so far.

The geese in the cold Grand River are startled as CN L540 flies over the bridge in Breslau at a very well maintained speed with GTW 6226 and CN 4028 for horsepower. Unfortunately in a photographer’s perspective, this bridge is now slightly less appealing as railings were placed on both sides permanently by Metrolinx for general safety purposes. Although I missed out on plenty GEXR opportunities here, I still managed to get a few with CN this being my only one with a good amount of snow which looks great with the water. As for 6226, this unit is now assigned to the Ottawa area and for some reason Kitchener was the only place it was based out of in this part of Ontario and not for long either.

On a sunny summer morning, a CN 149 with a pair of EMD’s rolls into London with their train of double stacks for Chicago as 2 double sets of yard power sit unassigned on the west end of London Yard consisting a blue GMTX leaser on both sets. The GMTX 2695 / CN 1439 would be taken on 439 to Chatham for 514 the next day.

In the midst of a snow storm which brightened the day up briefly, OSR 182 and 181 curve out of Beachville passing the namesake mile board with a lengthly train for CP in Woodstock. MLW’s in a fresh snow storm is sweet in this era, iconic Canadian scene.

After combining the 4028/4116 with the 4725 and GMTX 2163, 568 slowly pulls its tonnage out of Kitchener Yard westbound for Stratford in the afternoon summer light. They were switching the yard with the GP38 pair until 540 with the GP9Rm’s arrived from Guelph to combine both sets together for the relatively up hill run to Stratford.

Arriving in Stratford Yard with a decent amount of tonnage is 568 led by a favourable no GMTX 4 pack of geeps 3 being GP9Rm’s as the conductor exits the unit to prepare for the set out. The units are relaxing now after an aggressive trip from Kitchener in the high notches trying to bring the train up to track speed and make good time. I believe the slow order (10mph I think) over hwy 7/8 in New Hamburg was still in place as well. The track that cuts out to the right I believe was part of the Drumbo Sub lead which went down to Paris, a line that was relatively straight down to the south east.

I’d usually be out on Boxing Day looking for deals on stuff but for obvious reasons I can’t do that. The roads are decently dead and really the only thing out there making noise on this end of town is 568’s engines as they do their switching duties on the east end of the yard building a train for Guelph. Hearing on the scanner that they’re looking for the light to head east with the 4028 once their work is done, I left home after hearing that as I knew the snow would kick things up photogenically with this veteran unit. I got here when they were just reversing back onto a cut of cars left by the previous L533 and as they started to pull for headroom, I pulled off this image which I’m pleased about as the snow just started calmly coming down as they passed the graffitied wall on the right drilling the east end of Kitchener Yard.

Overall, the year 2020 brought out some great opportunities for photos and I’m glad I made a good collection over the year that’ll be saved for later. Some obviously, can be brought out now. OSR had some eyebrow raisers over the year in particular such as them making the last move down CN’s Cayuga Spur with their matching F units, the deadline move from Guelph to Salford when the GJR was taken by GEXR, and as well as the ex BC Rail M420W’s being moved off OSR’s property. Those just to name a few gave great photo opportunities with great people making this year one to remember. Another one that was notable was the triple header on the Woodstock Job at the beginning of December which was what I believe the only day a triple header has occurred out of Salford this year (corrections welcome). As seen in the photo, RS18u’s 182 and 181 lead 1620 which was on the GJR division for a while up the Tillsonburg Spur by the Ingersoll mile board on the former Port Burwell Subdivision in great winter morning sun. They had a lengthy train from T69 in Woodstock so the extra unit was added, and was a surprise as they slowly pull into town for their day’s duties. Happy New Year’s Eve everyone, best of luck in the new year.

An unusual Sunday brings both of Kitchener’s power sets being separated. 540 took the GMTX set to Guelph leaving 568 with the CN set to make their movement to Stratford and HCL with a D6 from Babcock and Wilcox for Bruce Power near Goderich. A quick heads up that they’re ready to leave Kitchener with the GTW 6226 up front made me quickly run out the door and beat them to a spot I know I wouldn’t miss them at which brings this. The sun is out partially and the ground is snowy giving a perfect photo combo for the GTW 6226 and CN 4028 as they pull over the large intersection at Foundry St and Snyder’s Rd in Baden with a clear signal and the generator on the tail end. It’s decently hard to see anything out of Kitchener that isn’t with a blue GMTX leaser but it could very well happen at any time depending on what’s needed and that’s what peaks my interest. The high headlight on this former DT&I unit was also a neat change to your usual Guelph Sub power.

Having just shot the St Thomas Job down in Tillsonburg, I noticed going by Salford that the remaining ex BC Rail M420W’s have been removed off one of the deadlines out of sight and that the Woodstock Job had just left for it’s days work. Quick drive up to Ingersoll hoping I haven’t missed them as I didn’t know how close they were — not 30 seconds getting out of the car, 182’s horn started to blow for the crossing behind me with the 181, CFS 641, and 646 in trail. Quickly turning around after they cleared the road brings a shot that looks like they’re leading down to Salford, but they aren’t. Sold to Sartigan Railway in Quebec along with the other pair of MLW’s that went earlier in the year, it’s clear these units are being used as part sources for the 644 and 647 that are already at their home. Shortly after, they’ll be set off on the west end of Ingersoll Yard for the St Thomas Job to lift for St Thomas where they’ll be transferred to CN 584. Don’t let the bottom of this frame fool you, not sponsored by Heineken.

Deep trip into the archives brings this out. Time is about 16:29 on this sunny February afternoon as the notorious EMD trio pulls GEXR no. 431 into Kitchener up the grade with the motors wide open even with a relatively short train. The Eldorado building on the left has always been an icon for me as I grew up a couple kilometres south of here and would always see it driving down Lackner Blvd towards the tracks, never realized an angle was possible with GEXR and the building until 10 years later which brings this photo. Just 2 and a half years ago it was a whole different look in town railway wise which makes going through shots from then a good time. Haven’t tried CN here yet, but it’s on my list.

Just east of Downtown Ingersoll, the pair of former CN F units owned by the OSR roll into town with traffic from CP T69 in Woodstock. The CN noodle on the sign guarding the former site located beside the OSR/CN interchange which is out of frame provides a well composition in my eye with the history of these motors. With the F units having the most CN related history on OSR’s roster, I thought this shot would be the best fitting with these units on this very clear October evening - a great start to a good weekend. Was a good chase this day with good people and I’m pretty happy this shot is checked off for me. Anyone have info on the site that this gate was protecting?
